ABOUT US 

AsylumWorks (soon to be Arrived) is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit that partners with immigrants, their families, and the broader community to create pathways to safety, stability, and opportunity. Founded in 2016, we have provided direct services to more than 4,000 individuals from over 50 countries. In summer 2026, AsylumWorks will officially change its name to Arrived — a change that reflects the organization’s growth over the past decade, from serving primarily asylum seekers to supporting immigrants at every stage of the immigration process.

Our work spans across three core programs: 1) Health & Wellness services to connect newcomers to the physical and emotional care they need; 2) Economic Mobility services to help job seekers find and maintain living-wage employment that aligns with their skills and goals; and 3) Legal Navigation services to help immigrants understand their rights and access the legal protection they need.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION 

AsylumWorks seeks a Social Work Intern (voluntary) for a field placement on our Health and Wellness (H&W) team, focusing on clinical case management with adult clients. The intern will report to the Clinical Lead (LCSW) and receive comprehensive training and supervision throughout the placement.

All H&W staff practice in full compliance with the NASW Code of Ethics and applicable laws, applying sound ethical judgment across all aspects of their work.

This is a hybrid position requiring 2–3 days per week in the office. Candidates must be able to commit to a minimum of 6 months, with a preference of 9–12 months.

Direct Service Provision Responsibilities

• Provide clinical case management* to client households (individuals and families) through the whole-family approach
• Conduct trauma-informed new client intake appointments
• Establish trust and rapport to create safe and supportive working relationships with clients 
• Assess, monitor, and evaluate client needs across the bio-psycho-social-spiritual-legal wellness spectrum 
• Assist clients in developing strengths-based, client-led wellness plans with goals that can be achieved as part of a 6-month service plan 
• Work with clients to develop coping skills needed to manage emotional distress 
• Help clients identify, understand and manage the ongoing effects of trauma 
• Provide referrals to help clients to access community resources to meet urgent and unmet basic needs 
• Provide psychoeducation
• Ensure all client interactions are documented as case notes in a timely and consistent manner
• Attend regular professional development opportunities and trainings

 

*Clinical case management is a technical social work modality that utilizes clinical skills to perform 13 distinct activities, including, but not limited to, engagement of the client, assessment, planning, linkage with resources, consultation with families, collaboration with immigration legal, health and mental health providers, client psychoeducation, and crisis intervention. AsylumWorks staff do not diagnose clients or provide psychotherapy. If a preliminary diagnosis is identified, clients interested in mental health services will be referred to an external provider. 

REQUIREMENTS 

• Current Master’s of Social Work (MSW) student at a local university;
• Fluency in English and another language (Spanish, Dari, Pashto, French, or Amharic);
• Experience or interest in working with individuals who have experienced significant trauma and/or displacement;
• Desire to learn about crisis intervention, safety planning, and clinical case management;
• Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary, multicultural setting;
• A demonstrated awareness of cultural humility;
• Strong interpersonal communication skills;
• Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly around deadlines and program compliance;
• Proficiency in Google Workspace (including Google Sheets);
• Computer literate; and
• An inherent desire to improve, create, and problem-solve.
