Monitoring and Evaluation Intern, Fall 2026

ABOUT US

AsylumWorks (soon to be Arrived) is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit that partners with immigrants, their families, and the broader community to create pathways to safety, stability, and opportunity. Founded in 2016, we have provided direct services to more than 4,000 individuals from over 50 countries. In summer 2026, AsylumWorks will officially change its name to Arrived — a change that reflects the organization’s growth over the past decade, from serving primarily asylum seekers to supporting immigrants at every stage of the immigration process. Our work spans across three core programs: 1) Health & Wellness services to connect newcomers to the physical and emotional care they need; 2) Economic Mobility services to help job seekers find and maintain living-wage employment that aligns with their skills and goals; and 3) Legal Navigation services to help immigrants understand their rights and access the legal protection they need.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

AsylumWorks seeks a motivated and detail-oriented Monitoring & Evaluation Intern to support the administration of a structured client outcomes survey program. The volunteer intern (unpaid) will pilot pre-service (intake), post-service (exit), and follow-up surveys with AsylumWorks clients using a validated, trauma-informed survey instrument. The intern will provide feedback on the pilot to inform survey instrument changes and a full launch of the instrument to the entire caseload. The intern will also be responsible for programming the survey into a platform, implementing skip rules, to facilitate data collection, implementation, and good data quality.

This is a hands-on role that provides meaningful experience in program evaluation, research methods, direct engagement with immigrant and refugee communities, and applying qualitative interviewing and analysis skills.

The intern will work under the supervision of AsylumWorks program staff, and will be trained in all required protocols prior to beginning data collection. This role is ideal for students or early-career professionals pursuing fields such as public health, social work, international development, nonprofit management, psychology, or research methods.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Survey Administration

  • Administer structured intake (pre-service), exit (post-service), 6 or 12-month follow-up surveys to AsylumWorks clients by phone or in person.
  • Follow standardized scripts and question filters to ensure consistent, high-quality data collection across all survey time points.
  • Apply appropriate question filters based on the services each client has received (e.g., employment and education services, legal navigation services).
  • Make multiple contact attempts (minimum 3–5) at varied times to maximize survey response rates at exit and follow-up.
  • Distribute participant incentives (e.g., gift cards) promptly following survey completion in accordance with AsylumWorks protocols.

Trauma-Informed & Culturally Responsive Engagement

  • Conduct all surveys using trauma-informed and culturally responsive communication, respecting the lived experiences of clients.
  • Administer surveys in clients’ preferred language using bilingual capacity or interpretation services as available.
  • Recognize signs of distress and inform AsylumWorks staff as needed to activate appropriate response procedures.

Data Entry & Management

  • Program the survey into a platform, implementing skip rules, to facilitate data collection, implementation, and good data quality.
  • Enter all survey responses directly and accurately into the secure data collection platform during each interview.
  • Link all responses to unique participant identifiers to allow for matching of intake, exit, and follow-up data.
  • Flag missing or inconsistent data and report data quality issues to the supervisor.
  • Assist with periodic data quality reviews and contribute to maintaining a clean, organized dataset.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality by storing all data in secure, password-protected systems and sharing only with authorized evaluation personnel.

Qualitative Interviews (as capacity allows)

  • Analyze Most Significant Change (MSC) qualitative interview questions received by case managers at closure
  • Pilot testing of surveys; interview clients to see how they understood the questions, etc.; propose changes to survey instruments based on analysis and validated survey instruments

Coordination & Reporting

  • Coordinate scheduling of survey interviews with clients and program staff to ensure timely completion within required windows:
    • Intake: within 1 to 2 weeks of program enrollment
    • Exit: at service completion or within 2 to 4 weeks after
    • 6-Month Follow-Up: 6 to 7 months post-exit
    • 12-Month Follow-Up: 12 to 14 months post-exit
  • Track survey completion, response rates, and attrition; report progress to the supervisor on a regular basis.
  • Contribute to an evaluation team debrief at the end of the internship with observations on survey administration, client engagement, and recommendations for process improvement.
