Learning to navigate the U.S. healthcare system is one of the most common challenges newcomers face upon arrival. AsylumWorks can provide care coordination to help newcomers access primary healthcare, specialist medical care, and dental services through our network of free or low-cost community partners.
Our staff provides trauma-informed care in a safe, caring, and inclusive environment that acknowledges the importance of different life experiences. Working in partnership with clients, staff teach refugee newcomers how to identify the effects of trauma, develop new coping skills, and problem-solve their way out of crisis.
Immigration can be a lonely and isolating experience. To foster connection and belonging, AsylumWorks hosts a variety of community groups, skill-building workshops, text-based chat groups, and community celebrations throughout the year. These events are designed to empower refugee newcomers to gather, share knowledge, and build new relationships.
A TASTE OF TOGETHERNESS
Uniting Community Through
Culinary Traditions
Food possesses a remarkable power to unite people across racial, religious, cultural, and identity differences. This unifying force comes alive annually at Taste of AsylumWorks, our international food-tasting competition that draws nearly 200 guests to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of the individuals and families we serve. From delicate Afghan dumplings to savory Salvadoran pupusas, each dish presented tells a meaningful story of tradition, heritage, and home.
EMPOWERED PARENTING
Building Community and
Resilience for Afghan Mothers
Parenting in a new country can be challenging, especially when separated from traditional support systems. In response, AsylumWorks piloted a new community wellness group for Afghan mothers raising children in the U.S. Led by a child and family therapist and parenting coach, participants learned positive parenting strategies designed to help themselves and their family members cope with adversity and uncertainty.
