A New Chapter: Reza’s Path to Asylum

After three years of fear, transience, and uncertainty, Reza—a newcomer from Afghanistan—received the message that changed everything. On January 14, 2025, he learned he had been granted asylum in the United States.

Reza’s journey to safety spanned ten countries, traveling by foot, car, and train before finally reaching Woodbridge, Virginia. At his most vulnerable, he found AsylumWorks. We provided him with the guidance and support he needed to file his asylum case and turn survival into stability. In this interview, Reza shares how AsylumWorks empowered him to take back control of his future.

What were the biggest challenges you faced in the U.S.?

“Leaving your country to join a new society comes with many challenges—language barriers, cultural differences, and, above all, access to resources. The U.S. has a lot of resources, but many immigrants don’t know how to find them or navigate the system. I even fell victim to an immigration scam. Someone pretended to be a lawyer, and I lost so much money. People take advantage of newcomers because we don’t know where to turn.”

How did AsylumWorks support you?

“AsylumWorks was a bridge to the resources I needed. They helped in so many ways. Finding a real attorney was urgent, and AsylumWorks connected me with a pro-bono lawyer to guide me through the legal system. My case manager also provided cash assistance, food, and other essentials. She connected me with a doctor. She taught me how to manage my stress.

But the real reason I’m doing better now is because AsylumWorks gave me more than just resources—they gave me knowledge. They teach newcomers how to navigate life here. At AsylumWorks, I learned that I have the right to rebuild my life, and there are people in this country willing to help. That motivated me to keep going.”

How do you feel now that you are granted asylum?

“No one wants to leave their family or their home. People migrate because they have no choice. When I received asylum, I told myself, ‘It’s time to be stronger than ever before.’ This is the beginning of a new life for me–a chance to rebuild, update my plans, and live in peace.”

What are your goals for the future?

“My first goal is to return to my field in computer science. I’ve applied to jobs before and knew I was qualified, but my immigration status held me back. Now that I have asylum, I’m ready to try again. Thanks to AsylumWorks’ Employment & Education program, I learned how to update my resume, improve my documents, and navigate the job search process.

My second goal is to give back. I want to share my knowledge and experience with other asylum seekers. It’s about more than just me—it’s about the community. I want to help others access the information and resources they need, just as AsylumWorks helped me.”

Today, Reza joins thousands of other asylees building new lives in the United States. His story demonstrates that with culturally responsive support and knowledge, newcomers can heal, rebuild, and thrive. Explore our 2023 Annual Report to learn more about Reza’s journey to the U.S.
