Health & Wellness Services

Many individuals and families seeking humanitarian-based immigration protection arrive in the U.S. with many needs but few resources. AsylumWorks’ Health & Wellness team provides various services to help individuals and families protect and promote their safety, health, and wellness. Bilingual, bicultural staff work with newcomers to address their physical, psychological, and social needs.

Physical Wellness

Learning to navigate the U.S. healthcare system is one of the most common challenges newcomers face upon arrival. Staff can help newcomers access primary and specialist medical care through one of our free or low-cost medical partners. Staff can also provide care coordination and education so newcomers can navigate the benefit application process.

Psychological Wellness

Staff provide trauma-informed care to ensure newcomers are met with a safe, caring, and inclusive environment that acknowledges the importance of different life experiences. Working in partnership with clients, staff teach clients how to manage the effects of trauma, learn new coping skills, and plan and problem-solve their way out of crisis. Staff can also make referrals to community partners as requested by clients.

Community Wellness

AsylumWorks hosts peer-support groups, workshops, and events so newcomers can gather, share knowledge, and give and receive support.
Community Wellness Spotlight:

PRISM

LGBTQ+ asylum seekers face unique challenges, including discrimination within their own diaspora. PRISM (Pride Refugee & Immigrant Support Meet-Up) was created to build a safe, affirming, and inclusive community group for LGBTQ+ newcomers. This group includes a group chat, an in-person monthly dinner, an emotional support group, and special events to celebrate Pride Month.

Taste of AsylumWorks

Taste of AsylumWorks is an international food-tasting competition created to celebrate the culture and diversity of AsylumWorks clients. Amateur client chefs cook comfort food from around the world as they compete against each other to win a cash prize. Clients, staff, donors, and other guests in attendance sample client dishes to vote for their favorite dishes across several categories.

Celebrating Legal Victories

It's important to take the time to celebrate major life milestones in our community. AsylumWorks created a special event to do just that. Once a year, our community comes together to recognize newcomers celebrating recent legal victories, including asylum granted or family reunification.
