Finding a job is challenging for anyone, but especially for newcomers with disabilities like Abeba*. A blind client from Eritrea, Abeba once led an organization advocating for women with disabilities. Now in the U.S., her immigration status makes her ineligible for mainstream employment services, further complicating her transition into the workforce.
After searching online for resources, Abeba discovered AsylumWorks. She discussed her need for employment with her therapeutic case manager and was promptly enrolled in AsylumWorks’ Employment & Education program. Through personalized career coaching, Abeba learned to navigate the U.S. job search process and develop a plan to advance her career.
AsylumWorks provided not only practical assistance but also emotional support, helping Abeba stay motivated. One day, while on her way to a meeting with her job coach, Abeba received a call from a potential employer. Unfortunately, she had not been selected for the job. Understandably upset, Abeba still attended her scheduled meeting at AsylumWorks. It was during that meeting that Abeba’s job coach helped her process the news and create a plan for moving forward. Later that evening, Abeba emailed her job coach to thank her for allowing her to voice her disappointment and frustration. “I’m so glad I didn’t cancel the meeting,” Abeba wrote. “Today was a hard day but your support has lifted my spirit and made me feel less alone.”
In July 2024, Abeba’s perseverance paid off when she was accepted into a prestigious digital accessibility training program. Now, she’s gaining IT skills to make applications accessible to the visually impaired. As Abeba progresses in her training, she is not only starting a second career but also contributing to making technology more inclusive for others with disabilities.
