Legal Navigation Program Internship, Spring 2026

Our interdisciplinary approach combines Health & Wellness, Employment & Education, and Legal Navigation services to help clients rebuild healthy, safe, and self-sufficient lives. Services are free and available to newcomers living in the Washington, D.C. metro region, regardless of language or country of origin. Central to our approach is our commitment to hiring and training bilingual newcomers to support other newcomers. INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION 

AsylumWorks is seeking a current law student or pre-law undergraduate to serve as a volunteer intern with our Legal Navigation program during the Spring 2026 semester. The intern will contribute at least 20 hours per week, providing practical support that strengthens client services and enhances overall program operations in alignment with our mission. The Legal Navigation Program Manager will supervise this position. This position requires regular in-office presence at our Dupont Circle location for hands-on learning. 

This unpaid opportunity is ideal for a driven individual seeking experience in immigration legal services for asylum seekers, refugees, and humanitarian parolees. This internship will allow participants to connect

meaningfully with AsylumWorks staff and support critical immigration legal services for AsylumWorks clients. The Legal Navigation Program Manager will supervise the intern. 

AsylumWorks recognizes that pursuing a degree is a pivotal time for students to learn about their professional goals and develop the skills needed to enter the professional sphere. While this internship is unpaid, the intern will have the opportunity to propose a related individual project that can add additional value to their professional portfolio outside of the internship duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Coordinate client legal immigration application packages to file with USCIS 
  • Research and remain up-to-date on legal frameworks relevant to AsylumWorks clients as policy changes arise
  • Prepare and maintain immigration related educational toolkits
  • Organize and maintain client legal documentation, including legal referrals and tracking sheets 
  • Support partnership management with law firms by reviewing partner reports and data 
  • Support the facilitation of legal education sessions on immigration-related law updates provided by licensed immigration lawyers 
  • Connect clients with language resources and coordinate document translation
  • Facilitate special projects to address client needs and other tasks as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Current law school or pre-law undergraduate student; 
  • Competence in using conditional formatting and data validation to ensure data accuracy and consistency in MS Excel and Google Sheets; 
  • Ability to streamline workflows and improve efficiency using Excel-based solutions; 
  • Able to multitask in a high-volume, fast-paced environment;
  • A demonstrated awareness of cultural humility; 
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills; and 
  • An inherent desire to improve, create, and problem-solve.
